타자 평가시 사용하는 OPS의 한계와 문제점
OPS에 주루능력이 포함되지 않은 점을 차치하고라도, 또한 OPS 자체역시 출루율과 장타율의 비중의 문제로 인해서 선수의 생산력을 평가하는데 맹점을 가지고 있는 스탯입니다. OPS내의 출루율과 장타율의 비중이 어째서 타당하지 않은 지를 RC 27과의 상관관계를 통해서 살펴보았습니다.
베이스볼 프로스펙트의 자료에 의하면 득점과 타격 스탯의 상관관계는 다음과 같습니다.

1871년부터 2003년까지 미국 야구의 득점과 RC의 상관계수는 0.928이고 OPS의 상관계수는 0.922입니다. OPS보다 RC가 더 실제득점과 상관관계가 있다는 것이며, 이는 RC가 OPS보다 더 정확한 스탯이라는 뜻입니다.
똑같은 OPS를 기록한 선수들의 RC를 비교했을 때 OPS내의 출루율과 장타율의 비중이 합리적이라면 동일한 OPS를 기록한 두 선수의 RC도 동일한 경향의 수치를 기록해야만 합니다. 왜냐하면 RC 요소중 거의 대부분의 비중을 차지하는 것이 안타, 볼넷, 토탈베이스이며 OPS또한 안타, 볼넷, 토탈베이스로 구성으로 된 스탯이기 때문입니다.
그러나 타자의 능력을 평가함에 있어서 누적스탯인 RC와 비율스탯인 OPS를 비교하는 것은 적절하지 않기 때문에 27아웃당 타석생산력을 나타내는 비율 스탯 RC 27과 OPS를 비교해 보았습니다.
2009년 동일 OPS를 기록한 선수들의 ESPN의 RC 27을 비교한 표입니다.

2009 시즌 동일한 OPS를 기록한 메이저리그 선수중에서 출루율과 장타율이 차이가 나는 14그룹의 RC 27를 비교했을 때 출루율이 높은 선수들의 RC 27이 장타율이 높은 선수들에 비해서 모두 높았습니다. 평균 출루율 +33.3 포인트가 높은 그룹의 선수들은 평균 장타율 +33.5 포인트가 높은 선수들에 비해서 평균 RC 27 +0.412가 높았습니다. 출루율이 높은 선수들의 평균 도루숫자가 장타율이 높은 선수그룹보다 많기 때문에 장타율이 높고 도루가 많은 7그룹의 RC 27을 다시 비교해보았습니다.

전체 14그룹중 장타율이 더 높고, 도루를 더 많이 기록한 7그룹의 선수마저도 출루율이 높은 선수에 비해서 RC 27이 더 낮은 결과가 나타났습니다.
ESPN의 RC는 OPS의 요소와 거의 비슷한 요소로 구성된 기본 RC 공식에 도루와 도실등의 기타요소가 추가된 스탯입니다. 동일 OPS를 기록한 그룹의 장타율이 높은 선수들이 OPS에서 평가되지 않는 도루부분의 점수를 RC에서 추가로 득점했음에도 불구하고 출루율이 높은 선수들보다 RC 27이 낮았으며, 장타율이 더 높은 7명의 선수들은 도루에서 평균 8.3개의 우위를 기록했지만, 평균 RC 27 에서 0.389라는 적지 않은 차이가 났습니다.
OPS와 RC 27 두 가지 비율 스탯의 상관관계를 보았을 때 OPS에서 출루율이 과소평가를 받고 있으며 반대로 장타율은 과대평가 받고 있다는 것을 알 수 있습니다.
똑같은 OPS를 기록한 14그룹 중에서,
- 14그룹 모두 출루율이 높은 선수의 RC 27이 장타율이 높은 선수에 비해서 더 높다는 점,
- 장타율뿐만이 아니라 도루숫자도 더 많은 7 그룹의 선수들 모두 출루율이 높은 선수들에 비해서 RC 27이 낮다는 점
을 보았을 때 타자를 평가하는 스탯으로 OPS를 사용하기에는 부적합점이 있음을 알 수 있습니다. OPS보다 RC가 더 득점과 연관성이 높으며 더 정확한 스탯이지만 동일 OPS를 기록한 선수들의 RC 27의 차이가 매우 크기 때문입니다.
OPS로 평가하면 이번 시즌 추신수는 아메리칸리그에서 15위로 뛰어난 선수입니다. 하지만 RC 27로 평가하면 추신수는 OPS가 더 높은 8명의 선수를 제치고 아메리칸 리그에서 7번째로 뛰어난 선수로 순위가 상승합니다. OPS에서 추신수보다 높은 순위에 랭크되었지만 RC 27에서 추신수보다 하위에 랭크된 8명의 선수들은 모두 추신수보다 낮은 출루율을 기록했다는 공통점이 있습니다. 또한 추신수는 OPS에 포함되지 않는 21개의 도루를 기록했습니다. 7위와 15위. 15위와 7위. 이정도의 순위변동은 결코 무시할 수 있는 범위내의 편차라고 할 수 없습니다.
OPS내의 출루율이 장타율에 비해서 상대적으로 과소평가받고 있다는 방식으로 접근한 세이버매트릭스는 EQA, GPA 등이 있습니다. EQA의 공식에서는 OPS에 비해서 볼넷에 50%의 가중치를 두었고, GPA의 공식에서는 OPS에 비해서 출루율에 80%의 가중치를 두었습니다. 팀성적을 평가할때는 OPS가 가장 좋은 스탯입니다. 왜냐하면 모든 야구 사이트에서 OPS를 제공하고 있고 OPS이상으로 발전된 팀 스탯을 제공하는 야구사이트가 드물기 때문입니다.. 그러나 타자의 생산력을 평가하기 위한 스탯은 OPS보다는 더 정확하고 더 많은 요소를 평가하는 RC나 RC 27를 사용하는 것이 합리적이라고 판단됩니다.

OPS만 해도 비교적 꽤나 높은 신뢰도를 자랑하는(?) 수치지만 역시 무언가 모자라네요
OPS는 너무 둔탁한 스탯이라고 봅니다. 팀 비교할때는 아직도 훌륭하지만 개인 성적 비교할때는 적절한 스탯이 아니라고 봅니다.
2009/10/15 20:10RC나 RC 27도 단점이 있기는 하지만 OPS보다는 훨씬 정확한 스탯이니 더 좋은 스탯이 나오기 전까지는 가장 활용하기 좋은 스탯이라고 봅니다.
